  • Sushil Chandra appointed as new Chief Election Commissioner of India. He took charge on 13th April 2021. His tenure will end on 14th May 2022.
  • He replaced Suneel Arora, who retired on 13th April 2021.
  • The Election Commission would hold assembly polls in Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh under him.

Multinational military exercise “Shantir Ogrosena” concluded in Bangladesh.

  • The 10 day long multinational military exercise named “Shantir Ogrosena” concluded at the Bangabandhu Senanibas in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • Troops from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka participated in the exercise with observers from the USA, UK, Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Singapore.
  • The exercise was organised to pay tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his birth centenary and celebrate the golden jubilee of the liberation of Bangladesh.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan launched international center “Central Asia”.

  • Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have launched the construction of an international center for trade and economic cooperation named “Central Asia” on the borders of the two countries.
  • Uzbekistan Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov and Kazakhstan Prime Minister Askar Mamim, laid foundation stone at the construction site.
  • 400 hectares wide center, will have a capacity of accommodating 35,000 people and 5,000 trucks per day in both directions.

Sanskrit learning app ‘Little Guru’ launched in Bangladesh.

  • A Sanskrit learning app “Little Guru” launched in Bangladesh by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the High Commission of India on 12th April 2021.
  • The Sanskrit learning app is part of the campaign being run by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) to promote Sanskrit language among students, religious scholars, Indologists and historians across the world.
  • The Sanskrit learning app ‘Little Guru’ is based on an interactive platform which will make Sanskrit learning easy, entertaining and fun.

Government of India approved emergency use of Russian Vaccine Sputnik-V.

  • The Central drug regulator, DCGA has approved emergency use of the Russian Vaccine, Sputnik-V.
  • Sputnik-V has now become the 3rd vaccine to get emergency approval after CoviShield and CoVaxin.
  • Hyderabad based Dr Reddy’s Lab done the clinical trials of Sputnik-V.
  • Dr. Reddy’s Lab has also signed an MoU with the Russian Direct Investment Fund, RDIF for supply of the Russian vaccine in India.
  • Sputnik-V was developed by Gamaleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology last year in Russia.

Second youngest attorney general of US, Ramsey Clark passed away.

Important Points to Remember: 
  • Ramsey Clark, an outspoken activist and a harsh critic of US policy, passed away. He was 93.
  • Johnson appointed him as attorney general in 1967.
  • He was the second youngest attorney general ever. He was 39 at that time.
  • He fought racism and the death penalty, and represented declared foes of the United States including former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
