Deepak Kumar and Ajay Kumar Chaudhary is the new Executive Directors of RBI.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Deepak Kumar and Ajay Kumar Choudhary as new executive directors (ED) with effect from 03 January 2022.
Prior to being promoted as ED, Shri Ajay Kumar Choudhary was Chief General Manager-in-Charge, Department of Supervision. As Executive Director, Shri Choudhary will look after Fintech Department, Risk Monitoring Department and Inspection Department.
Prior to being promoted as ED, Dr. Deepak Kumar was heading the Department of Information Technology of the Reserve Bank of India. As Executive Director, Dr. Kumar will look after Foreign Exchange Department, Department of Communication and Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the RBI.

TS Tirumutri assumes new chair of UN Counter Terrorism Committee.
TS Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations named the new Chair of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) on 4th January 2022.
Prior to taking up his current position as Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, in May 2020, Tirumurti served as Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.
Airtel Payments Bank is now a scheduled bank.
Airtel Payments Bank Ltd. has been included in the Second Schedule to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 which means it has been categorised as a Scheduled Bank.

Security breach during Prime Minister’s visit to Punjab.
On 5th January 2022, Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi landed at Bathinda from where he was to go to the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala by helicopter. Due to rain and poor visibility, the Prime Minister waited for about 20 minutes for the weather to clear out.
When the weather did not improve, it was decided that he would visit the National Marytrs Memorial via road, which would take more than two hours. He proceeded to travel by road after necessary confirmation of necessary security arrangements by the DGP Punjab Police.
Around 30 kms away from the National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala, when the Prime Minister’s convoy reached a flyover, it was found that the road was blocked by some protestors.
The Prime Minister was stuck on a flyover for 15-20 minutes. This was a major lapse in the security of the Prime Minister.
UJALA completed 7 years of energy-efficient and affordable LED distribution.
Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India on January 5, 2015. In a short span, the programme has evolved to be world’s largest zero subsidy domestic lighting programme that addresses concerns like high electrification cost and high emissions that result from inefficient lighting.
As of 5th January 2022, more than 36.78 crore LEDs have been distributed across the country.
In 2014, UJALA succeeded in bringing down the retail price of LED bulbs from INR 300-350 per bulb to INR 70-80 per bulb.
As of 5th January 2022, 47,778 Million kWh per annum energy has been saved. 9,565 MW of peak demand has been avoided, along with 3,86 crore tonnes of reduction in CO2 emissions.

Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy R.K. Singh on 3 January 2022 dedicated Automatic Generation Control (AGC) to the nation. This is expected to facilitate achieving the government’s ambitious target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel-based generation capacity by 2030.
The AGC is being operated by Power System Operation Corporation (POSOCO) through National Load Despatch Centre. Through AGC, POSOCO sends signals to power plants every 4 seconds to maintain frequency and reliability of the Power System.
POSOCO Day is observed on 3rd January to commemorate its independent functioning that began on 3rd January 2017, under Ministry of Power as one of the Power PSUs after separating from POWERGRID as its subsidiary organization. It is responsible to ensure the integrated operation of the Grid in a reliable, efficient, and secure manner. It consists of 5 Regional Load Despatch Centres (RLDCs) and the National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC).

The Minister also dedicated the nation ‘LED Photometry Laboratory’ at CSIR-National Physical Laboratory.

The academy is set to hit a target of 25,000 flying hours in 2022 by inducting a record 121 cadets.

Social worker and Padma Shri recipient Sindhutai Sapkal passed away.
Indian social worker, Padma Shri awardee Sindhutai Sapkal has died in Pune.
Sapkal has adopted more than 1,000 orphan children over her long career and has received several awards for her social service.
In 2010, a Marathi biopic of Sapkal titled ‘Mi Sindhutai Sapkal Boltey’ was released in Maharashtra.
She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 in Social Work category.
Freedom fighter and BJP leader K Ayyappan Pillai passed away.
Veteran freedom fighter, eminent lawyer and one of the early leaders of the Kerala BJP, K Ayyappan Pillai passed away in Thiruvananthapuram.
He was 107 years old.
Ayyappan Pillai participated in the freedom struggle and met Mahatma Gandhi.
He was a member of Sree Moolam Praja Sabha of Travancore.
