Awards and Honors:

Albert Bourla, chairman and chief executive of global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, was awarded on January 19 the prestigious Genesis Prize for his efforts in leading the development of a COVID-19 vaccine. The $1 million award is granted each year to a person for their professional achievements, contributions to humanity and commitment to Jewish values.

Banking/Finance News:

On 19th January 2022, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chairman Ajay Tyagi launched Saa ₹thi – a mobile app on investor education.

Cabinet Decisions:

On 19th January 2022, Union Cabinet has approved approved a three-year extension of the tenure of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis that was set to end on March 31. The Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the extension at a cost of ₹43.68 crore.

On 19th January 2022, Union Cabinet has approved infusion of one thousand 500 crore rupees in Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited, (IREDA).

Defence News:

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a contract with the Government of Mauritius (GoM) for export of one Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH)-MKIII for the Mauritius Police Force.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) celebrated its 17th Raising Day on 19th January 2022. NDRF came into existence on January 19, 2006.

National News:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host first India-Central Asia Summit on 27th January 2022.The virtual summit will also be attended by five presidents – Kazakhstan’s Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Uzbekistan’s Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Emomali Rahmon, of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan’s Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyz Republic. This is the first engagement of its kind between India and the Central Asian countries at the level of leaders.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) has successfully installed in-house developed IP-based Automatic Message Switching System (IP AMSS) at Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata Airports. IP AMSS facilitates the timely exchange of operationally significant Aeronautical, Flight and Meteorological messages for safe and efficient aircraft operation.

Saturnino de la Fuente, a Spaniard described by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest man, passed away on January 18 at the age of 112.
