Patent examiners at CGPDTM are entrusted with the responsibility of examine patent applications to determine their novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability. Their primary objective is to ascertain whether the invention meets the statutory requirements for patentability as outlined in the Indian Patents Act, 1970. These include novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability.
Novelty refers to the newness and uniqueness of the invention, implying that it should not be publicly disclosed or made available anywhere else before the filing date of the patent application. The inventive step includes that the invention must be new, not available anywhere and should be used in industrial applications.
The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks generally known as the Indian Patent Office, is an agency under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade which administers the Indian law of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks.

There will be an examination fee of ₹1000/- (Rupees One Thousand only) for candidates belonging to General category and OBC category. For candidates belonging to SC /ST category, PWD/ Differently abled (PH) category and women applicants (from all categories) and any other person, the examination fee shall be ₹500/- (Rupees Five Hundred only).

CGPDTM mains examination will be conducted in online and offline mode only and will consist of a written examination, which will consist of 2 papers i.e. Paper –I (CBT) and Paper –II (Descriptive answer). Paper I will be of 100 marks and Paper –II will be of 300 marks.

The CGPDTM selection process involves three phases as follows:
i. Preliminary Examination for screening of candidates for the mains examination.
ii. Mains Examination for shortlisting of candidates for Interview.
iii. Interview.
The candidate must have a Bachelor Degree in Science (B.Sc) or Master Degree in Science (M.Sc), Bachelor Degree in Engineering (BE), or Bachelor Degree in Technology (B.Tech) from a recognized university or institution.
The minimum age limit is 21 years, and the maximum age limit is 35 years. However, age relaxations may apply for candidates belonging to certain categories (such as SC/ST/OBC/PWD) as per government norms.
The candidate must be a citizen of India.

CGPDTM Prelims examination conducted in ONLINE mode only., It consists of one paper of objective type multiple choice questions and will comprise of 150 marks. This examination will be of a duration of 2 hours.
The cumulative marks obtained in Paper-I and Paper-II will be assigned 80% weightage in the final list of qualified candidates.
The interview will be for 100 marks and will test the candidate on the topics covered in the preliminary and the Mains examination. The marks obtained in the interview will be given 20% weightage in the final list of qualified candidates.
